When my son, Tyrus Phillips Jr., was born at just 25 weeks gestation, weighing only 1 pound, 11 ounces, our lives changed in an instant. From the moment he entered the world, he faced overwhelming odds and fought for every milestone.
At just two months old, Tyrus developed MRSA sepsis, a life-threatening infection that nearly took his life. During that time, he also battled necrotizing pneumonia, which affected part of his right lung. For the first three months of his life, he depended on both jet and conventional ventilators to help him breathe. He was later diagnosed with moderate to severe bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD), a chronic lung disease common in extremely premature babies.
Over the next eight months, our family spent countless days and nights in the hospital watching Tyrus fight through infections, procedures, setbacks, and victories. Every ounce gained, every step forward, and every milestone gave us hope. Despite everything he endured, he continued to show incredible strength and determination.
Today, after months of intensive medical care and extensive tracheostomy and ventilator training for our family, we are finally preparing to bring Tyrus home. While his journey is far from over, reaching this milestone is something we once only dreamed about.
We hope that by sharing Tyrus' story, we can raise awareness about prematurity, the long-term impact of chronic lung disease, the realities of life in the NICU, and the resilience of the children and families who face these challenges every day.
To every family still walking the NICU journey, know that you are not alone. Hold on to hope, celebrate every milestone, and never underestimate the strength of these incredible little fighters.
