Aaralyn's Story

Aaralyn’s gestational age was 32 weeks, 1 day. She was born weighing only 2 lbs, 2 oz, and stayed in the NICU from December 3, 2022, until March 3, 2023. Upon leaving the hospital, she had been diagnosed with Oral Dysphagia—a fancy way of saying she wouldn’t drink out of a bottle. 

When I learned I’d be delivering her so early, I was sure her chances were slim. But the NICU staff and all the FSNCC staff assured me that everything would be okay and that she was in great hands. Right after she was born, Aaralyn was breathing on her own and didn’t need extra support for anything besides her nutrients, which has been a challenge, even now. After almost three months in the NICU, we decided to have a G-tube placed so we could take her home and manage her nutrition ourselves. 

During those three months in the hospital, FSNCC was there for us, hosting events and supporting us as NICU and disabled child parents. They looked out for Aaralyn when we couldn’t be there, which made all the difference. Now that she’s home, she’s grown like a weed, eating a lot by mouth, with so many teeth coming in. While she still struggles with getting enough food, we know she’ll get there eventually! 

If you or anyone you know has a child in the NICU, who is disabled, or was born prematurely, please know—it will get better, and brighter days are ahead. The NICU stay isn’t the high point or the end; it’s the beginning of something beautiful!
