Caring for families in the NICU is one of FSN-CC’s most important commitments; in fact, our main office is located just across the hall from the NICU at Women’s Hospital of Greensboro. Our NICU services are funded by the Guilford County Partnership for Children.
We offer the following services to help support families during this difficult time: |
|
- Special events for NICU families offered each month. Check the calendar outside the NICU for specific dates & times. These gatherings provide opportunities to meet other families with babies currently in the NICU, as well as “graduate” families whose babies have been in the NICU. You can also share a meal, make a baby keepsake, and get the latest information about caring for your baby.
- Sibling support: Brothers and sisters are welcome to join us each Thursday evening from 6:00-7:00 pm for crafts and other fun activities. We also offer books especially for siblings; ask one of our staff members for details. Kids can also check out our Sibkit: a rolling cart of quiet activities that can be wheeled to your baby’s bedside for visiting brothers and sisters.
- Family-friendly printed information: We have a well-stocked lending library featuring the latest books, videos, and other materials regarding having a baby in the NICU. Ask an FSN-CC staff member for more information.
- Elizabeth’s Closet: This program provides new or gently used baby care items and equipment for families needing assistance. We gratefully acknowledge Two Men and a Truck, who donate storage space for this program.
- Vouchers for families needing assistance with gas, food, and baby supplies.
Early Intervention Services
- The Family Support Network of Central Carolina offers Early Intervention Services, free of charge, to qualifying NICU graduate families residing in Guilford County. The Early Interventionist begins working with families while their baby is hospitalized, and follows their progress for approximately 4-6 months after discharge. Monitoring and enhancing development, coordinating follow-up services, and connecting families to community resources are just a few of the ways the Early Interventionist provides support to families.
Parent Advisory Committee
- The NICU Parent Advisory Committee assists by helping to host special events for current and graduate NICU families, providing feedback to staff regarding “family centered” issues within the unit, and hosting NICU staff appreciation events. Additional activities include hosting a booth at the annual NICU reunion to recruit new committee members and familiarize staff with our activities, serving on parent panels, and becoming trained support parents to offer emotional support to current NICU families.
