The Family Support Network of Central Carolina could not exist without the assistance of the many generous individuals who support us as volunteers. Here are a few ways you can help local families get the help and support they need to provide the special care their children deserve.
Become a Support Parent. When a baby is born prematurely, or a child is diagnosed with a disability or chronic illness, nothing quite compares with the knowing, empathetic support that can come from another parent who has "been there." Research has shown that families tend to cope better with the special needs of a child when they are offered the support of another parent who has experienced a similar situation (click here to read more). It is with this understanding that we offer our Parent Matching program.
Our volunteer Support Parents experience a one-of-a-kind training program, which usually spans two evenings at the Education Center in the Women's Hospital of Greensboro. Participants enjoy dinner together while reflecting on their own family's experiences, then covering an array of topics including confidentiality; effective telephone support; responding to difficult questions; and much, much more. After training, participants are periodically matched with parents whose situations are similar to their own. FSNCC monitors the first few contacts between the families, offering ongoing support and information every step of the way. Often, relationships between "matched" families develop into longlasting friendships. Support parents are always free to accept or decline a match as their lives and schedules permit.

Organize a diaper drive. FSNCC is proud to offer Elizabeth's Closet, our warehouse of baby care items for qualifying families who are leaving the NICU. (Storage space for the Closet is generously provided by Two Men and a Truck.) We are always in need of new or gently used furniture, blankets, clothing, bath items...and, of course, diapers! To learn more about how you can help ensure that every family takes their baby home from the NICU with everything they need to care for their special babies, please contact us.
